The LVAR Government Affairs Committee (GAC) has been working on establishing an open dialogue and building strong relationships with elected officials across the Lehigh Valley.
In 2007, the GAC rolled out a new program called the “Local Mayor Roundtable Series” which began during today’s committee meeting. Under this new program, the GAC invites local mayors and other elected officials to attend their monthly meetings to have informal roundtable discussions about issues of mutual concern.
The meetings serve as a forum for local elected officials to share with our members’ first-hand information on ongoing economic development and revitalization projects, local politics, and other real estate related matters in their respective municipalities. The meetings also serve as an opportunity for REALTORS® to show elected officials that we are organized and interested in the being a part of the public policy making process.
By cultivating meaningful relationships, REALTORS® have the opportunity to build vibrant, safe and livable communities in partnership with elected officials. REALTORS® also can shape the debate on the many issues impacting their business.
Today, Easton Mayor Phil Mitman (R) and Northampton County Councilman J. Michael Dowd (R) had an in-dept discussion with the GAC on many redevelopment projects in the City. Mayor Mitman reported that along with improving public safety and cleanliness of the City, future plans call for over $200 million in public and private investments, resulting in over 250 new condominium units and 25 new businesses. City of Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan is scheduled to attend next month’s GAC meeting.
